Over 500 students from polytechnics across South-West Nigeria have commenced a hands-on training programme in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion in Lagos.
The training aimed at equipping the next generation of engineers with sustainable energy skills.
The initiative, themed “The Future of CNG in Nigeria: Empowering a Sustainable Tomorrow,” is being spearheaded by the Mojisola Olayinka Fatungase Edema (MOFE) Foundation in partnership with the South-West Zone of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS).
The training kicked off at Yaba College of Technology, with the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, highlighting the environmental and economic benefits of adopting CNG as a cleaner fuel alternative.
He noted that CNG emits fewer pollutants than petrol or diesel, and its use supports Nigeria’s climate commitments by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Describing the training as a strategic move toward sustainable development, Osiyemi praised the organisers for investing in youth empowerment and sustainable energy practices.

He disclosed that participants would receive one month of intensive practical training from top industry experts, culminating in certification.
In her keynote address, Funmilade Akingbagbohun, the immediate past National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), underscored the programme’s role in reducing dependence on imported petroleum products and boosting the economy through job creation.
“Training 500 students in CNG technology means we are not just preparing them for employment but also building a workforce that will lead Nigeria into a cleaner, more sustainable energy future,” she said.
Officials from the Lagos State Ministries of Youth and Social Development, Energy and Mineral Resources, alongside key industry stakeholders, were also present at the launch.
