Christian Eriksen has left VfL Wolfsburg by mutual consent, three months after collapsing on the pitch during an international friendly.
The German club confirmed the termination of his contract, which was due to run until June 30, 2027, on Wednesday. The Danish midfielder has not played since the incident in June.
VfL Wolfsburg released a formal statement confirming the decision after Managing Director of Sport, Dieter Hecking explained the club’s position.
The incident that led to this decision occurred on June 7. Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine at the Odense Isstadion was abandoned after Eriksen collapsed in the 65th minute.

Eriksen’s implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a device fitted after his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, shocked him during the match. The midfielder collapsed after appearing to clutch his chest. He was able to walk to a waiting ambulance, which took him to hospital for further tests.
The following month, Wolfsburg confirmed Eriksen would undertake an individual rehabilitation programme in his native Denmark. He has not played since then.
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent one year ago, following his departure from Manchester United. He brought vast experience, having made over 300 Premier League appearances and nearly 100 in European competition.

He made 34 appearances for Wolfsburg across the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and relegation play-offs. He scored three goals and provided ten assists. His performances helped the club in a challenging season, though Wolfsburg were ultimately relegated from the Bundesliga.
Despite the short tenure, his professionalism and quality left a mark on the club.
Eriksen must wait before he can join a new club. FIFA regulations prevent a player whose contract is terminated after the transfer window closes from being registered outside a transfer window. He cannot sign for a new club until the January window opens.
Until then, he can train with a club but cannot play official matches.
Speculation about his future has already begun. Reports have linked him with a return to Odense BK, his boyhood club in Denmark. Ajax, where he began his professional career, have also been mentioned. Eriksen previously expressed openness to a return to Amsterdam.
Christian Eriksen has given football some of its most emotional moments. His return after Euro 2020 was a story of extraordinary courage. His performances for Tottenham, Inter Milan and Denmark have been celebrated worldwide.
