Customs launches initiative to alleviate food scarcity 


The Nigerian Customs Service has obtained government approval to sell seized food items to needy Nigerians at discounted prices after completing the verification process, which requires presenting the National Identification Number (NIN).

The Customs Comptroller-General, Bashir Adeniyi emphasised that the primary goal of this initiative is to provide essential food items to those in need, aligning with the Nigeria Customs Service’s dedication to enhancing its social welfare responsibility programme.

“The target groups include artisans, teachers, nurses, religious bodies, and other Nigerians within our operational areas. The intention is to reach out directly to members through these organized structures to ensure the maximum impact of this exercise.

“It is imperative that beneficiaries of this exercise understand that the items are not to be resold. We take a strong stance against any form of profiteering or exploitation of this initiative. We urge Nigerians to report any incidents of misuse or unauthorized resale of the seized food items.” the CGC said.

He reiterated his commitment to support the administration led by President Bola Tinubu in addressing the urgent issue of food insecurity by ensuring essential food items are readily available to Nigerians.

Speaking at the launch of the rice distribution program in Lagos on Thursday, he emphasized that rice distribution would prioritize areas where customs operations are active, ensuring direct access for beneficiaries.

Mr Adeniyi stressed the crucial role of transparency and accountability in the distribution process, urging Nigerians involved in the initiative to refrain from selling the rice in markets or hoarding it for reasons other than domestic consumption.
