The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strict directive prohibiting police officers from carrying rifles while dressed in civilian attire.

He also cautioned against human rights violations and other forms of misconduct within the force.

During a virtual meeting with senior police officers yesterday, Egbetokun emphasised that no officer should be seen wielding assault rifles while in mufti.

This directive, announced in a statement by police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, reinforces the need for professionalism and adherence to standard operating procedures.

The IGP acknowledged receiving numerous complaints about rights violations through the police complaint channels and warned that any officer found guilty of such offenses would face serious consequences.

He also directed all tactical squads to strictly adhere to their designated uniforms and refrain from abusing their authority.

Furthermore, Egbetokun condemned the indiscriminate transfer of cases without his written approval, stressing that such practices cause unnecessary delays in justice and place undue burdens on those involved.

Moving forward, all police units are expected to comply fully with these regulations to enhance accountability and public trust.
