Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has paid tribute to the late Andrew Omotor, a firefighter who lost his life while responding to an emergency.

The governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua described Omotor as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect lives and property.

Represented by the Edo State Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa, the governor led a delegation to visit the late firefighter’s family in Benin City.

The delegation included Queeneth Orobedo, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Safety and Security; Jerry Idahosa, Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA); and Omoluru Osayande, Director of the Edo State Fire Service.

During the visit, Okungbowa conveyed Governor Okpebholo’s condolences to the family, describing Omotor as a courageous and diligent firefighter who died in the line of duty.

He emphasised that the 45-year-old left behind a grieving wife, six children, and an elderly mother, all of whom are struggling to cope with the loss of their breadwinner.

“We are here to mourn with the family of one of our fallen heroes, Mr Andreww Omotor,” Okungbowa said. “He answered a distress call to save lives and properties but, unfortunately, paid the ultimate price. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

He further disclosed that another firefighter injured during the incident is receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

Okungbowa assured the family that Governor Okpebholo would personally visit them to offer additional support.

“The governor, known for his compassion, has promised to ensure that necessary measures are taken to provide relief to the family during this challenging time,” he added.
