Renowned Nigerian music producer and record executive, Don Jazzy, has disclosed that he almost gave up on his music career and relocated abroad following the sudden collapse of Mo’Hits Records in 2012.
Speaking in an interview with Rolling Stone, Don Jazzy said the breakup of the label he co-founded with D’banj left him deeply discouraged, but support from friends convinced him to stay in Nigeria and begin afresh — a decision that led to the birth of Mavin Records.
“When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” he said.

The award-winning producer added that the experience strengthened his resolve and taught him resilience, noting that since the Mo’Hits era, nothing has been able to shake his determination.
After the split, Don Jazzy went on to establish Mavin Records, which became home to several former Mo’Hits artists, including Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince. The label later introduced new stars such as Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, and Di’ja.
Today, Mavin Records boasts a roster of celebrated artists like Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, Johnny Drille, and DJ Big N.
In 2024, Universal Music Group announced a majority investment in Mavin Global, marking a significant step in expanding the label’s influence on the global music scene.
