Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has lauded Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress, and Nigeria’s female football team, Super Falcons for making the country proud globally.
Obi congratulated D’Tigress for emerging as Africa champions for the fourth consecutive time in the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket championship as well as the Super Falcons for progressing to the Round-16 at the ongoing female World Cup tournament in Australia and New Zealand.
According to Obi, the Super Falcons put up a good fight against England, saying the country is proud of them, despite the result.
The former Anambra State governor added that D’Tigress’ sacrifices and Super Falcon’s struggles showcase the new Nigeria the citizens are looking forward to which will be anchored on youth development.
He stated that there is a need to build a nation where talented youths will be free to develop their skills in many areas of endeavor and have opportunities to offer their skills to the global market and the development of the nation.
“We are proud of what they have accomplished and happy with the victory they brought to the nation. I appreciate them for their sacrifices and years of training which pushed them to victory. To the coach, Rena Wakama, who just etched her name in the books of history as the first female coach to win the competition since its inception in 1966, I celebrate you.
