Midfield legend Sergio Busquets has announced his retirement from professional football, set to conclude his career after Inter Miami’s 2025 MLS season.
The 37-year-old Spanish midfielder revealed his decision through an emotional video posted on Instagram, stating, “These will be my final months on the pitch”.
Busquets will remain available for Inter Miami through their playoff campaign, which could extend until the MLS Cup final on December 6.
The decorated midfielder leaves behind an extraordinary legacy spanning nearly two decades, including 722 appearances for Barcelona, 143 caps for Spain, and recent success with Inter Miami.
Former rival and Spain teammate Sergio Ramos led the tributes, describing Busquets as “one of the most brilliant midfielders” he had ever played with.
“Football is losing one of the most brilliant midfielders I’ve ever played with, but you leave with the recognition and gratitude of all who have been with you,” Ramos stated on social media.
Barcelona officially honored their former captain as a “legend,” acknowledging his contributions to the club’s most successful era.
During his illustrious career, Busquets amassed an impressive trophy collection, including nine La Liga titles, three Champions League trophies, and the 2010 World Cup with Spain.
At Inter Miami, where he reunited with former Barcelona teammates, including Lionel Messi, Busquets has made 105 appearances and secured two trophies since his 2023 arrival.
The midfielder’s final regular-season match is scheduled against Atlanta United on October 12, with potential playoff appearances to follow.
