Chukwuebuka Enekwechi finished 11th in the men’s shot put final at the World Indoor Championships in Poland, throwing 20.04 metres as Nigeria’s sole representative at the competition.
The 29-year-old competed among 17 athletes in the final but could not match the medal-winning distances. The event was won by United States’ Ryan Crouser with a championship record throw of 22.81 metres.
Enekwechi, a two-time African champion outdoors, accepted the outcome with characteristic resolve. “We live to fight another day,” he said after the competition.
The Nigerian thrower has now competed at multiple global championships, consistently raising the country’s profile in a field traditionally dominated by European and American athletes.
His performance in Poland marked his second appearance at the World Indoor Championships. He previously placed 12th in Belgrade in 2022.
Enekwechi was the only Nigerian athlete to feature in the five-day championships, which concluded on Sunday. His participation alone represented a victory for Nigerian field athletics on the global stage.

The shot putter holds Nigeria’s national record with a personal best of 21.80 metres outdoors, set at the 2022 African Championships. He remains the country’s most consistent medal contender in throwing events.
Enekwechi will now divert his focus to the outdoor season, with the African Championships and Commonwealth Games on the horizon later this year.
