England lose as Japan deliver Wembley shock

Japan handed Thomas Tuchel's side a heavy blow in their final friendly before the 2026 World Cup squad announcement.

England’s final home outing before the World Cup ended in disappointment after Japan claimed a historic 1-0 victory at Wembley.

The Three Lions’ final home game before the World Cup ended in a disappointing defeat as they were beaten by Japan. Head coach Thomas Tuchel was without captain Harry Kane after a training knock.

The absence of Kane exposed England’s attacking limitations. Phil Foden struggled in an unfamiliar false nine role and Tuchel failed to find a proper solution.

Brighton forward Kaoru Mitoma finished off a sweeping counter-attack in the 23rd minute to give Japan victory.

Tuchel made sweeping changes to his lineup. However, the lack of cohesion was evident throughout.
