“Environmental sustainability must begin with personal responsibility” – Lagos govt to residents

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has stressed that overcoming global challenges like climate change and waste management necessitates a fundamental shift towards personal responsibility and heightened environmental awareness among all residents.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Tajudeen Gaji, delivered this message over the weekend at the 2025 Environmental Bees Club (EBC) Members and Handlers Sensitisation Programme held in Alausa.

Gaji, represented by the Director of the Environmental Education Unit, Monsurat Banire, emphasised that the programme is intended to be more than just a learning exercise—it is a call to action aimed at transforming mindsets.

Gaji highlighted the EBC as a key part of the State Government’s visionary approach, recognising the power of young people as agents of change.

The programme actively engages students in hands-on environmental projects and educational activities, with this year’s focus being on practical environmental stewardship.

The sensitisation encouraged participants from all six Education Districts—who gathered in a single location for greater impact—to think critically, act responsibly, and advocate for sustainability in their schools and communities.

A refreshing element this year was the Eco-Winner Sustainability Tour, which added a competitive spirit by rewarding students who demonstrated excellence and innovation in their environmental commitments.

While affirming the administration’s steadfast commitment to implementing policies—including waste management reforms, green infrastructure, and renewable energy sustainability, Gaji insisted that government efforts alone are insufficient.

“The success of the initiatives depends largely on collective responsibility,” he stated, urging students, teachers, parents, and communities to recognise their roles in building a resilient and sustainable Lagos.

He commended the dedicated EBC handlers (teachers) as the crucial “bridge between policy and practice.”

During a training session, Deputy Director, Environmental Assessment, Lasisi Adedoyin, described climate change and explained that preventive measures are known technically as mitigation measures, while adjustable responses are called adaptation measures.

The event concluded with the presentation of attractive prizes to students who distinguished themselves.
