Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri yesterday joined hundreds of worshippers at St. Matthias Catholic Church, Amarata, Yenagoa, for the parish’s Feast Day Cultural Fiesta.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to faith-based development and critical infrastructure projects across the state.
Accompanied by top government officials, the governor used the occasion to call for greater dependence on God in leadership and governance, while also providing updates on the state’s ongoing gas turbine power project.

Speaking during the celebration, Diri urged politicians and public office seekers to view leadership as a divine assignment rather than a personal ambition.
He stressed the need for leaders to seek God’s guidance before pursuing political power.

The governor also pledged continued financial and logistical support towards the completion of the new St. Matthias Catholic Church building, a landmark project with deep historical significance in the state.
Founded in 1910, the 116-year-old parish began construction of its new church auditorium in 2013.
Diri assured parishioners that his administration would work closely with the church to ensure the project is completed before the end of his tenure.
“Our administration will continue to partner with the Church to strengthen Christian values and activities across Bayelsa State,” the governor said.
Diri also spoke on the state’s gas turbine electricity project, reiterating his administration’s resolve to deliver a stable power supply without politicising development initiatives.
According to him, test operations have continued successfully, with electricity already transmitted to the Opolo axis of Yenagoa.
He disclosed that engineers are currently extending power lines towards the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) state headquarters, while communities in Kpansia and surrounding areas are expected to receive supply within the week.

The governor maintained that the project remained a key part of his administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure and economic growth in Bayelsa State.
Governor’s support
The Feast Day Mass was presided over by Most Rev. Hyacinth Egbebo, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Bomadi, alongside the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Bruno Douglas.
In his remarks, Rev. Fr. Douglas commended Diri for opening governance to religious institutions and community development initiatives.
He noted that obtaining government support for church-related projects had been difficult before Diri assumed office in February 2020.

The cleric also praised the governor for his consistency, accessibility, and commitment to peace, unity and equitable infrastructure development across the state.
