Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham

Arsenal remain top of the Premier League with a comprehensive 3-1 win over rivals Tottenham.

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey opened scoring after being assisted by Ben White but Harry Kane levelled from the spot.

Further goals from Gabriel Jesus and Swiss international Granit Xhaka gave the Gunners victory in the North London derby.

It was also Spurs first loss in the EPL this season, after matchday nine.

Stats

  • Arsenal have won each of their last three Premier League home games against Tottenham for the first time since September 2013.
  • Tottenham have now failed to win any of their last 12 Premier League visits to Arsenal (D4 L8). It is currently their longest ongoing run in the competition.
  • Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is just the third manager in the club’s history to win each of his first three home games against Tottenham after George Morrell (1909-1911) and Terry Neill (1977-1979).

Bournemouth 0-0 Brentford

The home side extended their unbeaten run to four games in a pulsating encounter at the Vitality Stadium. Bournemouth have witnessed steady progress under Gary O’Neil, who replaced the sacked Scott Parker.

Ivan Toney had a great opportunity to give the visitors the lead in the second period but shot off target. The hosts felt they had been undone by a couple penalty calls they deemed should have been in their favour.

Stats

  • Bournemouth have now failed to score in any of their last three Premier League home games, their longest run without a goal at the Vitality Stadium in the top-flight.
  • The Bees have kept their first league clean sheet away from home in over a year. They had failed to do so in any of their previous 19 such fixtures. It is a run which was the longest of any side in the league.
  • Gary O’Neil’s side are now unbeaten in their last four Premier League games (W1 D3). It is their longest run without a defeat in the league since October 2018. Back then, they also went four undefeated under Eddie Howe (W3 D1).
  • Brentford won possession of the ball in the final third of the pitch on 12 occasions against Bournemouth. This is their highest-ever tally in a Premier League match. It is just the second time they’ve done so on 10+ occasions (10 v Norwich in March).

Fulham 1-4 Newcastle

Paraguay international Miguel Almirón scored twice in a man-of-the-match performance at the once dreaded Craven Cottage. Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff were the other goal-getters for the away side in the big win.

Joe Willock was also impressive and grabbed a pair of assists while Fulham’s consolation came late in the match. Neeskens Kebano had set up Jamaica international Bobby Reid for the Cottagers’ only goal of the match.

Liverpool 3-3 Brighton & Hove Albion

It was an eventful afternoon at the Anfield with six goals evenly shared in the EPL matchday nine encounter. Belgian Leandro Trossard took home the match ball after wreaking havoc against the Liverpool defence.

Roberto Firmino scored twice while an Adam Webster own goal made it three for Jurgen Kloop’s men.

Stats

  • Leandro Trossard became the first visiting player to score a first-half double at Anfield in the Premier League since October 2008, when Wigan’s Amr Zaki netted twice before half-time
  • It is the 10th time Liverpool have conceded first in their last 15 competitive games.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Conor Gallagher both scored their first goals for Chelsea in a hard-fought win at the Selhurst Park.

Aubameyang was once an important figure in the Arsenal squad before joining Barcelona and then returning to England

Odsonne Edouard broke the deadlock seven minutes into the match following good work from Jordan Ayew. Gabonese striker Aubameyang then equalised after he was found by Thiago Silva.

Silva was lucky to receive only a yellow card after he handled the ball. He denied Palace a clear opportunity to break through on goal.

On the 90th minute mark, just when it seemed Graham Potter’s second match in charge of the Blues was heading for another 1-1 draw, Gallagher scored a fantastic curling effort against his former side. Vicente Guaita stretched well, getting the tip of his fingers to the ball, but he was beaten.

Chelsea have now won four of their seven EPL games after matchday nine. They have claimed a draw and lost two games so far. Crystal Palace have won only one league game this season and are 17th on the log.

Stats

  • Graham Potter won against Crystal Palace for the first time in eight career attempts
  • With the victory, Chelsea extended their winning run against Palace to 11 matches.

Southampton 1-2 Everton

It was a weekend of ‘firsts’ in the EPL matchday nine. Conor Coady and Dwight McNeil also grabbed their first goals for Everton.

Sensational Nigerian midfielder Joe-Ayodele Aribo drew the first blood with his left-footed strike in the 49th minute. The Toffees responded through former Wolves defender Coady just three minutes later.

McNeil then netted the winner two minutes after the equaliser following beautiful assist from the dependable Alex Iwobi. Everton have greatly improved under Frank Lampard and with only matchday nine of the EPL season gone, there’s still much to look forward to.

Aribo scored for Rangers in the final of the Europa League last season

Stats

  • Everton won an away Premier League game in which they conceded first for the first time since February 2020. The team had been winless in 24 such games before today (D4 L20).
  • Southampton have dropped 92 points from winning positions in the Premier League under manager Ralph Hasenhüttl. That’s more than 20 more than any other side since his first game in charge.
  • Everton are unbeaten in six Premier League games (W2 D4). It is their longest run in a single season since a run of seven in November/December 2017.
  • There were just four minutes and 39 seconds between Joe Aribo putting Southampton 1-0 up, and both Conor Coady and Dwight McNeil scoring to give Everton the lead.
  • Everton’s Dwight McNeil scored his first Premier League goal since March 2021 (for Burnley against the Toffees). He’d failed to score with his last 66 attempts in the competition before today.
  • Five of Everton defender Conor Coady’s six Premier League goals have come away from home. Southampton are the first side he’s scored more than once against in the competition.

West Ham 2-0 Wolves

Italy international Gianluca Scamacca scored his first Premier League goal as West Ham beat Wolves 2-0. Jarrod Bowen also scored, ending his goal drought for the home side.

Scamacca had scored his first goal for the club in a Europa League meeting with Viborg back in August. On Saturday, the 23-year-old showed why the London side paid £35.5m to sign him from Sassuolo in July.

David Moyes’ team are now 15th on the league table after recording their second win of the season.

Stats

  • Wolves are without a win in eight Premier League away games (D2 L6).
  • Wolves have scored just three goals after eight Premier League games this season. It is their joint-worst return at this stage of a top-flight campaign.
  • 18 of Jarrod Bowen’s 22 Premier League goals for West Ham have come in home games (82%). Of all players to have scored at least 20 times in the competition, only Georginio Wijnaldum (85%) and Michael Carrick (83%) have scored a higher share in home games than Bowen.
  • Wolves had eight different Portuguese players in their starting lineup. That’s the most different starters from a specific nation outside of England any team has had in an EPL match.

Manchester City 6-3 Manchester United

A pair of hat-tricks from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland condemned Manchester United to a heavy 6-3 defeat on Sunday.

At halftime, United were 4-0 down and fans were seen already leaving the Stadium at that moment. Both Foden and Haaland had scored a brace each after the first 45 minutes.

Antony drilled in a left-footed bended shot into the corner but Foden and Haaland scored further goals to make it 6-1 after 73 minutes of action. Anthony Martial scored two late goals to reduce the deficit in the Manchester derby.

Stats

  • City became only the third side in Premier League history to have two players score hat-tricks in a single match.
  • Haaland had a hand in five of City’s six goals against United (3 goals, 2 assists). That’s the most goal involvements by a player in a single Premier League Manchester derby.
  • The Norwegian becomes the first player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick in 3 successive PL home games

Quickest players to three Premier League hat-tricks

Erling Haaland – 8 appearances
Michael Owen – 48 appearances
Ruud Van Nistelrooy – 59 appearances
Fernando Torres – 64 appearances
Andy Cole – 65 appearances.

Leeds 0-0 Aston Villa

Even though there was not enough quality in the final third, the game still witnessed a couple missed opportunities.

It was an aggressive and fiery contest at Elland road that saw Luis Sinisterra receiving an avoidable red card. The away side could not make the advantage count however and had to settle for a stalemate.

After this EPL matchday nine result, Leeds United now occupy 12th position with nine points from seven games. Aston Villa are 14th with eight points from eight matches.

Later on Monday night, Leicester will face Taiwo Awoniyi and Emmanuel Dennis’s Nottingham Forest at the King Power Stadium. Kick off is 20:00 WAT (also BST & GMT+1). It will be the last of the ten EPL matchday nine fixtures.

Both teams are currently in the bottom two positions on the Premier League table.
