The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has stated that there is no evidence that the use of face shields to replace face masks is effective.
According to NCDC, face shields should be used in combination with face masks to effectively prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Claiming that, Face shields are generally used in health care settings by medical professionals to provide barrier protection to the facial area, including the eyes, nose and lips.
According to the agency; face shields does not serve to function as a primary respiratory protection to prevent infection because face shields are used by health workers in combination with surgical masks.
This enables maximum protection during invasive procedures such as intubation.
The presidential task force on COVID-19, on the 27th of April, 2020 mandated the use of face masks or coverings in public spaces to prevent the spread of the virus.

NCDC believes that a significant proportion of people who have been infected with the virus do not show symptoms. In addition; the virus does spread even before people become aware that they are unwell.
The agency further stated that there is evidence that the correct use of face masks reduces the risk of COVID-19 infection.
There are currently no guidance provided by the World Health Organisation (WHO) or other relevant public health authority that recommends the use of face shields in non-healthcare settings to prevent COVID-19.
The agency further advised that there is no single intervention – even when properly used – provides complete protection from COVID-19 infection and advised that the use of face masks with face shields should be combined.
Lastly, NCDC confirmed that other measures like frequent hand washing with soap and warm water. The use of an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, and avoiding public gatherings should be adopted.
