Fernandes powers to FWA glory in defining season

Portuguese midfield general Fernandes is crowned FWA Footballer of the Year

Bruno Fernandes has been rewarded for a season of leadership and brilliance as the Manchester United captain claimed the 2025-26 FWA (Football Writers’ Association) Men’s Footballer of the Year award.

His numbers underline his impact across competitions. Fernandes has delivered eight goals and 19 assists in 34 league matches.

The Portuguese midfield maestro finished with 45% of the votes from the FWA’s 900-plus members.

He edged out Declan Rice and Erling Haaland in the voting that marked a significant personal milestone.

From doubt to dominance – Fernandes drives United’s resurgence

United’s revival owes much to Fernandes’ consistency and leadership. His performances have lifted the team into Champions League contention.

He is the first United player to win the FWA men’s award since Wayne Rooney did it in 2010. That places him in elite company.

His performances have silenced critics and reaffirmed his value. For United, he is not just a captain but a cornerstone.
