Former Manchester City and Brazil midfielder Fernandinho has officially retired from professional football. The 40-year-old confirmed the news after appearing in an emotional farewell charity match at Arena da Baixada.
The game marked a symbolic return to Athletico Paranaense, where his decorated journey began.
Fernandinho last played competitively for Athletico in 2024, closing out the final chapter of a remarkable career. His rise began in Brazil before he secured a major move to Shakhtar Donetsk.
In Ukraine, he grew into a commanding presence and helped the club dominate domestic football. During his time with Shakhtar, the midfielder captured six league titles and the 2009 UEFA Cup. His brilliance eventually attracted Manchester City, where he became a central figure. City signed him to strengthen their midfield, and he went on to exceed expectations.

At Manchester City, Fernandinho flourished under several managers and became a fan favourite. He lifted five Premier League titles and won the EFL Cup six times. Furthermore, he delivered consistent performances that shaped one of the Premier League’s most successful eras.

Fernandinho’s impact at City extended beyond trophies, as he placed eighth in the club’s all-time Premier League appearance list. He featured in 264 matches, contributing 20 goals and 19 assists. Additionally, his reading of the game produced 380 league interceptions, the fifth-highest in the club’s history.
On the international stage, he represented Brazil with pride across multiple tournaments. His major achievement came in the 2019 Copa America triumph. He also featured in 10 World Cup matches.
Speaking after the charity game, Fernandinho admitted the physical demands of football had finally caught up with him.
“I already got tired running for 30 minutes today,” he said with a smile. He added that nothing in the sport motivates him anymore, noting, “Everything I could enjoy, I enjoyed. Now, it’s time to enjoy time with the family.”
With his retirement now confirmed, Fernandinho leaves behind a legacy of leadership, excellence, and unmatched professionalism.
