Norway have moved to the edge of World Cup qualification for the first time in 28 years after Erling Haaland and Alexander Sorloth both delivered decisive braces in a commanding win over Estonia.
The victory strengthened their hold on top spot in Group I with a perfect seven wins from seven.Italy remain three points behind after a late 2–0 win over Moldova, although the Azzurri’s slim hopes rest on overturning Norway’s huge goal-difference advantage. With one match remaining, Italy are, however, unlikely to erase a 17-goal deficit.
Although Norway dominated early, they initially failed to convert several clear chances, which created tension in the first half. The pressure eased quickly after the restart as Sorloth rose highest to head home the vital opener. Moments later, he doubled the lead with another composed header, giving Norway full control.
Haaland then joined the scoring spree when he nodded in Julian Ryerson’s accurate cross. The Manchester City star, consequently, added his second soon after by drilling home from inside the box to extend the lead beyond Estonia’s reach.

Norway edge toward qualification as Italy delay final confirmation
Estonia reduced the deficit through a sharp strike from Robi Saarma, but it served only as a consolation because Norway had already sealed the outcome. The Norwegians, therefore, stood on the brink of qualification as they waited for the result from Italy’s match.
Italy struggled for 88 minutes despite firing 30 attempts, which briefly suggested Norway’s qualification would be confirmed on Thursday night. However, late goals from Gianluca Mancini and Pio Esposito ensured Norway must wait slightly longer for official confirmation.
Even so, Norway’s goal difference and perfect record mean their long-awaited World Cup return is, nonetheless, all but guaranteed. The team now look ahead with confidence as they chase their first appearance at the global showpiece since 1998.
