The Federal Government has formally expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives involving individuals arrested during law enforcement operations against suspected illegal mining activities within the Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Niger State.
The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed the sincere condolences of the Federal Government to the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, as well as the entire Government and people of the State.
Idris extended these sympathies to the traditional leadership and residents of Wushishi, paying special tribute to the grieving families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate encounter.
Constitutional rights protection and immediate suspensions
The Minister stressed that the Federal Government regards the protection of human lives, dignity, and fundamental rights of every citizen as a solemn constitutional responsibility. He noted that the circumstances surrounding these deaths require a thorough, transparent, and completely impartial investigation.
To establish the facts immediately, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, ordered the swift suspension of the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, while directing a full-scale inquiry into the tragedy.

Highlighting the importance of these swift measures, Idris emphasised that the prompt decision taken by the Minister of Interior demonstrates the extreme seriousness with which the Federal Government views the matter. He assured the public that the investigation will proceed unhindered to establish precisely what transpired during the operation.

“The swift action taken by the Honourable Minister of Interior underscores the seriousness with which the Federal Government views this matter. The investigation will be allowed to establish exactly what happened, and the Government assures Nigerians that appropriate action will be taken based on its findings,” Idris stated.
Enforcement limits and commitment to absolute accountability
The Minister clarified that while the Federal Government remains resolutely committed to eradicating illegal mining and illicit activities that threaten national security, economic resources, and environmental safety, all enforcement operations must be conducted strictly within the boundaries of the law and with absolute respect for human life and dignity.
He firmly declared that federal authorities will make no attempt to shield any security officer or individual found culpable once the investigative panel concludes its findings.
“There will be no attempt to shield anyone found culpable. At the same time, we mustn’t prejudge the outcome of the investigation. The Government’s responsibility is to ensure that the facts are established and that justice is served.”
Appeals for public calm and official solace
Idris appealed directly for calm across Wushishi and throughout Niger State, urging local communities, youth groups, and concerned stakeholders to allow the ongoing investigation to proceed without any form of interference or civil disruption.
He reiterated to the bereaved families and the people of Niger State that the Federal Government genuinely shares in their deep grief and remains fully dedicated to ensuring that the entire truth is established.
In closing, the Minister prayed for the eternal repose of the souls of the deceased, while asking Almighty Allah to grant their families, the Wushishi community, and the Government and people of Niger State the ultimate strength and fortitude to bear this painful loss.
