FG unveils revised curricula for primary, secondary, and technical schools

The Federal Government has announced the completion of a comprehensive review of curricula for basic, senior secondary, and technical education, aimed at preparing Nigerian learners for the future.

This was disclosed in Abuja by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa.

The announcement was contained in a statement released on Friday by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, and made public on Sunday.

According to Ahmad, the curriculum review was jointly carried out with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, the Universal Basic Education Commission, the National Senior Secondary Education Commission, and the National Board for Technical Education.

The minister explained that the new framework was designed to reduce overload, enhance learning quality, and ensure students acquire skills that meet global standards.

She clarified that the exercise was not just about reducing subjects, but about enriching content to promote deeper understanding.

“Under the revised structure, pupils in Primary 1–3 will study a minimum of nine and a maximum of 10 subjects; pupils in Primary 4–6 will take 10 to 12 subjects. Junior secondary students may offer 12 to 14 subjects, senior secondary students will take eight to nine subjects, and technical schools will offer nine to 11 subjects,” the statement read.

Ahmad added, “The revised curricula will reduce content overload and create more learning time for students,” stressing that the reforms are part of government’s efforts to provide relevant and practical education in today’s changing world.

The ministry also applauded stakeholders for their contributions to the process, assuring that implementation will be closely monitored to ensure a smooth transition nationwide. Although no specific date was provided, the rollout will be phased, with relevant agencies overseeing the adoption across schools.

It will be recalled that Dr. Alausa earlier shifted the commencement of the revised curriculum to September 2025, after his predecessor, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had initially scheduled its introduction for January 2025.

Mamman had stated that the new curriculum would require basic school pupils to acquire at least two practical skills.
