FIFA Women’s World Cup: Super Falcons book second round place after Ireland draw


The Super Falcons of Nigeria have reached the second round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the third time in nine attempts.

Nigeria drew goalless with the Republic of Ireland on Monday at Brisbane to confirm qualification for the round of 16.

Randy Waldrum-led side finished second in Group B with five points from three games. Australia ended top of the group with six points after earning a 4-0 win over Olympic Champions Canada.

Nigeria began the competition with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Canada. The Super Falcons the took it a step further in the second match, beating co-hosts Australia 3-2 on home soil.

Canada and the Republic of Ireland are now eliminated from the ongoing Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria, just like in the first two games, started the match slowly, allowing the Irish players to dominate.

Nigeria fumble in attack

Asisat Oshoala, who came off the bench to score the third goal against Australia, missed a glorious chance in the first half.

Uchenna Kanu was also denied by a great save as the West Africans could not convert their few chances.

The addition of Ifeoma Onumonu and Monday Gift proved little as Nigeria had to settle for a draw.

Now in the knockout round, Super Falcons have recorded two clean sheets at the World Cup for the first time. They are also the first African team to achieve that feat at the Women’s World Cup.
