Flamingos reach semifinals for the first time, beats USA 4-3


Nigeria’s under-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, qualified for their first-ever semi-finals of the FIFA u-17 Women’s World Cup in India on Saturday 21st October. 

The Flamingos beat their United States counterparts 4-3 on penalties after playing 1-1 during regulation time.

A penalty by Omamuzo Edafe put the Flamingos ahead in the first half. The kick was awarded after the centre referee checked the pitchside monitor.

 A few minutes after more pressure was mounted by the USA, they were able to get an equalizer through forward Amalia Villarreal five minutes before halftime.

The match ended 1-1 and went straight to penalty shootout. Edafe stepped up to convert the decisive kick that sealed the victory for the Flamingos.

According to the head coach of the Flamingos, Bankole Olowookere, “The best we have ever gotten at the U-17 Women’s World Cup is the quarter-final stage, I’m here to create a lot of upsets and set new records.”

The semifinal match is set to be held on Wednesday, 26th of October, 2022 at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Margao.
