Most outstanding Nigerian players in Europe’s top football leagues


Nigerian players are renowned for their proficiency on the field; also, their skillset and work ethics set them apart from their contemporaries.

On this list, we would be unraveling some of the most outstanding Nigerian players in major football leagues.

Paul Onuachu

Super Eagle Striker,  Paul Onuachu netted two goals for Genk, a Belgian Club in a 2-1 victory against Kortrijk over the weekend on Saturday, 8th October 2022. 

He acknowledged in an interview after the match that the  Smurfs were the better team during the first half but they missed several good chances to net goals. 

About his second goal against Kortrijk – a penalty he netted – he however expressed feeling better in the system.

 Thanks to Onuachu, Genk will stay second on the Belgian FDA table, two points behind Antwerp. 

From track records both on his national team and international appearances, Onuachu is that prolific scorer that will always give outstanding results.

Josh Maja

In September 2019, Josh Maja made his international debut playing for the Nigerian national team in a friendly match against Ukraine. 

He represented the Super Eagles Gernot Rohr. 

Despite the initial criticism against him in the League, Maja has gone on to prove critics wrong by bagging his sixth goal in five games of the season in the 2022/2023 season. 

In a match against Metz on Saturday, 8 October, Maja’s team Bordeaux won 2-0. 

Ademola Lookman

Ademola Lookman is eligible to play for the national team of both England and Nigeria. 

He was born in England to both Nigerian parents. 24-years old Lookman has scored two consecutive goals for Atlanta, in crucial games.

 Recently, In a 2-2 draw against Udinese, Lookman scored for Atlanta. Pending the result of Napoli’s fixture at Cremonese, this win takes Atlanta to the top of series A. 

Terem Moffi 

Terem Moffi plays as a forward for Lorient, Ligue 1 club. The last seven games for Lorient have seen Moffi netting eight goals for Lorient.

 Régis Le Bris, Lorient’s manager, expressed his assurance of Moffi’s quality in becoming Europe’s most coveted forwards. 

On Sunday, 9th of October 2022, Moffi scored a double against Brest, which makes it his eighth goal of the season. 

Kenneth Omeruo 

Omeruo currently plays as a defender for Leganes. 

He was a key part of the Super Eagles team that won the bronze medal in 2019 against Tunisia. In a recent 2-1 win over Cartagena, Omeruo scored a goal for Leganes. 

However, in their last four games, Omeruo alongside his teammates has failed to win any of their last four games.
