Nottingham Forest moved level on points with second-placed Arsenal after fending off a dramatic Southampton comeback at the City Ground.

Forest raced into a commanding 3-0 lead within 41 minutes, thanks to goals from Elliot Anderson, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Chris Wood. However, a spirited fightback by Southampton set up a nail-biting end to the game as Jan Bednarek’s fortuitous goal and Paul Onuachu’s towering header brought them back into the game.

Soton came close to an equaliser in stoppage time, but Ola Aina made a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Bednarek’s effort. Despite the tense finish, Forest held firm to extend their unbeaten league streak to eight games, a run that includes seven wins.

Defensive lapses haunt Southampton

Southampton’s performance, while resilient in the second half, was undermined by critical errors in the opening period. Anderson was given too much freedom to drive forward for Forest’s opener, while Bednarek’s poor touch led to Hudson-Odoi’s goal. The Saints have now conceded 17 goals this season due to defensive mistakes, a league-high statistic.

Although Onuachu’s late header provided a glimmer of hope, Southampton’s inability to capitalise on Forest’s rare defensive lapses left them rooted to the bottom of the table. Manager Ivan Juric, visibly frustrated, will need to address these recurring issues if his side hopes to close the 10-point gap to safety.

Momentum builds for Forest

Forest’s ability to take advantage of early chances proved decisive in maintaining their climb up the league table. Anderson’s low strike marked his first goal for the club, while Hudson-Odoi and Wood added to Southampton’s woes.

The victory keeps Forest third on goal difference. They have a seven-point cushion above sixth-placed Bournemouth, bolstering their European hopes.

For Southampton, however, the story remains bleak. Their fifth consecutive league defeat under Juric only highlights the uphill battle they face in their survival bid. Unless the Saints find a way to address individual mistakes and sustain consistency, their Premier League future looks increasingly uncertain.
