Aaron Ramsey has officially stepped away from professional football, bringing an accomplished career to a close. The former Arsenal midfielder made the decision after months without a club.
At 35, Ramsey exits the game as one of Wales’ finest footballers. He scored 21 goals in 86 appearances and featured at three major international tournaments.
His influence peaked during UEFA Euro 2016, where Wales reached a historic semi-final. Ramsey’s performances earned him a place in the tournament’s best XI.
He remained central to the national team, featuring at UEFA Euro 2020 and the FIFA World Cup 2022. That World Cup marked Wales’ long-awaited return after decades away.
At club level, Ramsey’s journey began with Cardiff City before his move to Arsenal in 2008. There, he lifted three FA Cups and scored decisive goals in two finals.
Ramsey’s legacy defined by big moments and lasting impact
His career later took him across Europe, including spells with Juventus and OGC Nice. He also returned to Cardiff and briefly stepped into a coaching role.
A final stint with Pumas UNAM in Mexico reflected his desire to remain competitive. However, after leaving the North American country, no new opportunity emerged, prompting his decision.

“This has not been an easy decision to make. After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football,” he wrote.
“Firstly, I want to start with Wales. It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it.

“It would not have been possible without the incredible input of all the managers I have played under and all the staff who have helped me in many ways.
“To the Red Wall. You have been there through thick and thin! You have been there through the highs and lows.
“You have been an essential and indispensable part of our success. I can’t thank you enough. We’ve been through everything together and it’s been an honour to represent you. Diolch.
“Secondly, thank you to all the clubs I’ve been lucky enough to play for. Thank you to all the managers and staff that have helped me be able to live my dream.
“And a huge thank you to my wife and children and all my family. Without you by my side throughout, none of this would have been possible,” Ramsey stated.
