Gov Okpebholo swears in 3 judges

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has fulfilled his promise to address past injustices by swearing in three judges previously sidelined by the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Festival Hall of the Government House in Benin City, saw Justices Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe officially joining the Bench of the Edo State High Court.

The governor in a statement by Fred Itua, his Chief Press Secretary said the appointments come eleven months after their recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC).

Governor Okpebholo criticised the previous administration for swearing in only five of the eight judges recommended by the NJC in May 2023, leaving three qualified candidates in limbo.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to justice and fairness, stating, “No one should be discriminated against, marginalized, or hated for personal reasons, or on account of not having a godfather.”

Okpebholo highlighted the significance of the judiciary in upholding the doctrine of Separation of Powers, emphasising the expectation for the newly sworn-in judges to maintain high standards, protect citizens’ rights, and ensure the delivery of justice.

Speaking on behalf of the sworn-in judges, Justice Ojo Maureen Osa expressed gratitude to the governor for rectifying the delay in their appointments.

She assured him of their commitment to dispense justice without fear or favor, praying for a successful and impactful tenure under his leadership.
