Senegalese-American singer Akon has reflected on his experience working with the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, describing it as a defining moment in his career.
Speaking on a recent episode of the We Need To Talk podcast, Akon said his collaboration with Michael Jackson remains the “proudest moment” of his professional journey.
The ‘Oh Africa’ singer also noted that, despite his own global fame, he still sees himself as far below the late pop star in stature and influence.

“My photo with Michael Jackson is my most proudest photo. I was already a full blown celebrity at the point the photo was taken. But I am a child compared to this man (Michael Jackson).
“I was so happy because I grew up looking up to him. He is like everybody’s Idol,” he said.

Akon, who is 53, also used the interview to highlight his long-standing support for African music. He revealed that he once helped sign Nigerian Afrobeats artists such as P-Square and Wizkid.
He, however, clarified that Wizkid was not directly signed by him, but came through his involvement in Banky W’s Empire Mate Entertainment, the label that originally managed the singer.
“Nigerians are the most intelligent people on the planet. They have done amazingly well with Afrobeats,” he added.
