Ifunanya Nwangene’s father recounts final moments with daughter

The father of late singer Ifunanya Nwangene, popularly known as Nanyah, has spoken about the last conversation he had with his daughter before she died from a snakebite.

Nanyah, aged 26, lost her life after a snake bit her while she was asleep in her home.

After she noticed the bite, she began searching for urgent medical care and moved from one hospital to another in search of treatment, but she did not survive.

In an interview with BBC Igbo, her father, Christopher Nwangene, explained how the incident happened.

He said his daughter called him around 9:15 a.m. to tell him that a snake had bitten her.

The news left him worried, and he immediately began asking questions about her location and the treatment she was receiving.

He said she first went to a hospital where health workers told her there was no anti-venom available.

She then tried another hospital but was again informed that the needed medication was not in stock.

As her condition continued to cause concern, she was directed to the Federal Medical Centre, where she was told the anti-venom could be found.

According to him, she took an Uber to the medical centre.

He quickly contacted his brother and asked him to go there to stay with her.

When his brother arrived, he saw her sitting down with a drip attached to her hand while doctors attended to her.

Her father said he called her again a few minutes later to check on her condition.

During that call, she told him she was struggling to breathe.

When he asked what was happening to her, she said she did not know the cause.

Those were the last words he heard from his daughter before news of her death reached the family.

He said, “She called me around 9:15am to tell me she had been bitten by a snake. I immediately asked her where she was and what the doctors were saying about her condition. I quickly contacted my brother and asked him to rush to the hospital. A few minutes later, I called her again. She told me, ‘Daddy, I cannot breathe.’ When I asked her what was happening, she said, ‘I don’t know.’”
