IGP Egbetokun reaffirms commitment to strengthening police healthcare system

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has met with all Heads of Police Medical Facilities nationwide, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to building a stronger, more responsive and professionally equipped Police healthcare system.

The inaugural National Meeting/Conference, held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan International Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja, convened medical commanders, senior officers, development partners and key stakeholders within the Nigeria Police healthcare architecture.

The meeting was themed “Transforming Policing in Nigeria: The Evolving Role of the Directorate of Force Medical Services.” Addressing participants, the IGP stated that the wellbeing of personnel remains central to operational readiness and national security, noting that officer welfare is a core plank of his policing vision.

He described the historic upgrade of the Police Medical Services to a full-fledged Directorate in August 2025 as a strategic milestone aimed at improving medical capacity, welfare delivery and standardized healthcare across all Commands and Formations.

Egbetokun highlighted that the Nigeria Police Force currently operates one of the most expansive and functional law enforcement medical networks in Africa, comprising 164 hospitals, clinics and medical posts serving officers, their families and often host communities.

He said this extensive medical footprint supports his goal of building a modern, professionally competent and people-focused Police Force.

In a detailed presentation, the Force Medical Director, AIG Nkechi I. Eze — the first female AIG to head the Directorate — expressed appreciation to the IGP for his leadership and reforms.

She outlined the Directorate’s expanded responsibilities in preventive medicine, trauma and emergency response, medical training and national health interventions.

She expressed confidence that continued institutional support and collaboration with development partners will accelerate the modernization of Police medical services.

A key highlight of the meeting was the launch of the “Know Your Numbers” Campaign, a nationwide preventive health initiative approved by the IGP. The campaign encourages officers to regularly check essential health indicators such as blood pressure, blood sugar, pulse rate and hepatitis/HIV status, aimed at reducing avoidable illnesses and promoting long-term wellness within the Force.

Reaffirming his commitment, the IGP said his administration remains determined to entrench a resilient and professionally competent policing system where officer health and welfare are prioritized as pillars of institutional strength.

The statement was released by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, anipr, mipra, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja on  December 11, 2025.
