The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun on Monday led Nigeria’s delegation to the 13th AFRIPOL Steering Committee Meeting in Algiers, Algeria, where senior African law enforcement officials gathered to deliberate on strategies to combat terrorism, transnational organised crime, and violent extremism.
The two-day summit, which runs from 7th to 8th July 2025, brings together Police Chiefs, security experts, and regional cooperation bodies to address the evolving security threats confronting the continent.
Egbetokun is attending in his capacity as Nigeria’s Police Chief and Chairperson of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO).
According to a statement by police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the high-level meeting features key briefings, including updates on transnational organised crime (TOC), operational progress on the African Secure Communication System (AFSECOM), and the development of AFRIPOL’s strategies on counter-terrorism and organised crime.

Also on the agenda are discussions on AFRIPOL’s ongoing reform process, engagements with African Union policy bodies, and plans for the 14th Steering Committee Meeting and 5th General Assembly.
Egbetokun reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks through enhanced intelligence sharing, regional cooperation, and joint security operations.
He stressed the importance of technology, interagency task forces, legal harmonisation, and improved officer training to tackle terrorism, cybercrime, trafficking, and cross-border threats.
He affirmed that “the battle against transnational organised crime cannot be won in isolation, but through unified purpose, coordinated action, and strategic cooperation.”
Participants at the meeting include the Algerian Director-General of National Security, Ali Badaoui, representatives from the Central African Police Chiefs Committee (CAPCCO), Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation (EAPCCO), and other regional police organisations.
IGP reaffirmed police support for AFRIPOL’s mission and its continued commitment to multilateral efforts aimed at securing communities and reinforcing Africa’s collective security framework.
