Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise, shifting it to after the 2027 general elections.

The decision was announced on Friday, following a strategic meeting between the Commission and its Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), where key priorities ahead of the polls were reviewed.

Although the exercise has been deferred, INEC stressed that voter revalidation remains a critical part of strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system.

The process is designed to clean up the National Register of Voters by verifying personal data, removing duplicate or ineligible entries, and allowing voters to correct errors in their records.

Ultimately, it is aimed at reinforcing the credibility and integrity of the voter database.

In a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC reassured Nigerians that the postponement would not affect its readiness for the 2027 elections.

The Commission said it remained fully committed to delivering “free, fair, credible and inclusive” polls.

By pushing the revalidation exercise to the post-election period, INEC appears to be sharpening its focus on the immediate demands of organising the 2027 elections, ensuring that logistics, planning and execution receive undivided attention.
