Covid-19, the pandemic presently travailing the world found its place in Nigeria from March 2020. This has resulted in the lockdown of many activities by the government.
Schools nationwide remain on lockdown. Churches in Lagos and Ogun States are yet to reopen. In order to curb the spread of Covid-19, the government has advised against the gathering of more than twenty persons. However, social distancing must also be observed.
Beyond social distancing, Nigerians have been advised to wash their hands regularly. Moreso, wear face masks, and maintain a high level of personal hygiene in general.
Nevertheless, Nigerians are known as a people who work better with visual examples. In fact, the essence of humanity is to learn by example. Leaders should show the citizens that laws are not just for the citizens but for the adherence of everyone.

It is paramount to note that elected leaders have often been subjects of blatant disobedience. Incessant disregard for stipulated laws by government representatives only serve to make the electorate doubt the relevance of such laws and indeed the credibility of the lawmakers .
Nigerians were disappointed at the absence of social distancing at the burial of the late Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari. The rule of social distancing was flouted as many persons gathered during the prayers for the repose of his soul.
The Abba Kyari saga and scenario unfortunately resurfaced at the burial of the former governor of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi. Ajimobi died at the age of 70 from Covid-19 related symptoms.

Former Governor, Ajimobi was buried on the 28th of June, 2020 in his hometown of Ibadan, Oyo state. Yet again, Nigerians witnessed another flouting of the law.
These are the obvious examples. The government must understand that flouting of rules by those who make them springs up distasteful comments among the citizens.
With the number of Coronavirus cases above 24,000 in Nigeria, It is discriminatory when citizens are withheld from carrying out lawful business activities because social distancing cannot be properly observed.
Spare a thought for what private teachers are currently going through, as they have been at home with students since March 20th 2020. Their source of income has been suspended because it does not give room for effective social distancing.
What about the religious places of worship? It is pertinent to note that there are some persons whose source of income depend on working within the church premises and in addition, some individuals have been so positively impacted by the church that they seek solace there on regular basis.
Next, major markets whose business days have been limited because the government is trying to curb the spread of Corona Virus. Although, we are not against the government’s decisions, we are only stating our losses as a people in this pandemic.
Reportedly, there are rumors of another lockdown in Lagos. Who suffers most when there is a lockdown? The people. Sources of income are halted and the people are promised palliative measures that barely get to them.
Those who received anything at all reported that the supplies could barely sustain them beyond that day. It is rather appalling that government is more concerned about itself than her people.
If the government do not want the people to keep saying that Covid-19 is a scam, they should endeavour to live by the rule they set for the people. They are also citizens of this great nation.
Social distancing, wearing of face mask, and regular washing of hands is a collective responsibility by all to curb the spread of the virus. Change begins with me. The government isnāt exempt.
