IWD 2025: A call to accelerate action on gender equality

A call to accelerate action on gender equality

Truth be told, I almost gave up on the term gender equality. It was a mere theory that would take a millennium to achieve. I was not all wrong. The United Nations also shared my school of thought and thought to make this year’s theme for International Women’s Day centered around the cause.  At the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158 to achieve full gender parity, according to the World Economic Forum. This year’s campaign emphasizes the urgency and importance of accelerating efforts to eliminate systemic barriers and biases that impede women’s equality.

A call to accelerate action on gender equality

The campaign theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is to accelerate action. This is concerning the cause of Gender inequality rampaging all over the globe. At this rate, SDG- is not achievable. And from the place where I write, the fangs of gender inequality are deep into the flesh of the people. Recently, there was a case of sexual harassment filed against a Senate President. The Senate President himself sits on the rulings, dismisses the case, and suspends his accuser who is a female lawmaker in the same Senate House. This fully pronounces no transparency as the rights of the woman are not even put into consideration. She is subdued by men who see them fit themselves high above status to be queried for sexual harassment.

Under the theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Equality. Rights. Empowerment,” this year’s commemoration celebrates the leadership and creativity of young people in advancing sustainable and inclusive development, with a focus on the green, digital, and care economies.

History of the Adoption of Gender Equality

‘Gender equality is intrinsically linked to sustainable development and is vital to the realization of human rights for all. The overall objective of gender equality is a society in which women and men enjoy the same opportunities, rights, and obligations in all spheres of life.’- UN Women

Do you know that Gender Equality was made part of international human rights law by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948? So this implies that when you treat one gender lesser to the other, you are infringing on the basic fundamental human right of the person.

The issue of gender equality stems from cultural preferences and traditions but as the world evolves, the need to eradicate gender roles is continuously highlighted.

According to the UN Women, the United Nations has made significant progress in advancing gender equality, including through landmark agreements such as the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

However, without the cooperation of societies, these frameworks put in place will not thrive. The concept of gender equality is not rebellious. It is simply stating that one gender should not be mistreated because they are seen as weak. If gender equality is not near achievable, at least societies should let gender equity thrive.

How to join the fight?

International Women’s Day should be commemorated by everyone. The strive for gender equality concerns everyone. People’s female relations face the thorns of gender mistreatment which affects not only victims but their relations also.

You can join the fight by associating with organizations that take the lead on the cause of gender equality and lend your voice to the activism. On normal days, you can take causes on gender studies on UN SDG: Learn. This will help you stay informed and provide a proper perspective on gender equality by the UN standards.

Also, stay informed about traces of gender mistreatment in your society. Make sure to involve the appropriate authorities if you see any trace of gender-based violence.
