James Milner has retired from professional football at the age of 40. The Brighton midfielder, who started his career at Leeds United in 2002, ends a journey that spanned 23 years and more than 900 club appearances.
Milner confirmed his decision after Brighton’s final league match of the season. “It’s been an incredible ride,” he told the club’s media channels. “I’ve given everything I have. Now it’s time to rest.”
The former England international won three Premier League titles with Manchester City in 2012, 2014, and 2019. He added two FA Cups, two League Cups, two Community Shields, and the 2019 Champions League during a trophy-laden spell at Liverpool.
His Premier League record stands as his most remarkable achievement. Milner retired as the third-highest appearance maker in the division’s history with 644 games.
Only Gareth Barry (653) and Ryan Giggs (672) sit above him. He played against 61 different opposition clubs, scored 60 goals, and registered 92 assists from every position on the pitch except centre-back and goalkeeper.

The farewell
“I never dreamed I’d play this long,” Milner wrote in a farewell message. “To all the managers who trusted me. To all the teammates who ran alongside me. To all the fans who supported me. Thank you. It’s been an honour.”
The Premier League has lost one of its great constants. For 23 years, James Milner was always there. Running. Tackling. Crossing. Winning. Now, finally, he walks away.
