Kevin Keegan has revealed he is fighting stage four cancer, the most advanced form of the disease. The announcement has sent shockwaves across football even as football fans and players unite in support of the veteran.
The 75-year-old’s condition was first shared by his family in January after hospital tests. Those checks followed ongoing abdominal concerns, which ultimately led to a life-changing diagnosis.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Keegan appeared publicly in Newcastle, receiving a powerful standing ovation. The emotional welcome demonstrated his lasting bond with the city and its supporters.
“I was in a car accident and, through that, I had to have an operation,” he said. The scan for that procedure revealed the illness unexpectedly.
“Whilst having the scan for the operation, they found out I had cancer. They said they had an absolute top doctor.
“So I went to meet him. He’s a Liverpool supporter so I knew I wouldn’t walk alone.” His humour drew warmth from the audience.
“He said, ‘Kevin, this new treatment, I’ve got a tremendous strike rate’.” However, the figure surprised him.
“I said, ‘What’s your strike rate?’ He said, ‘33%’. I thought it would be 80%, 90%. 33%!
“I’m still here at the moment,” Keevin stated.
