Lafarge Africa restores Independence Memorial Obelisk

Lafarge Africa Plc has restored the Independence Memorial Obelisk in Lagos, reaffirming its commitment to cultural preservation and sustainable infrastructure development through the rehabilitation of the landmark structure at Tafawa Balewa Square.

The project, which focused on renewing the Independence Memorial Obelisk without altering its historical identity, included structural strengthening, improved accessibility, aesthetic upgrades and the restoration of symbolic carvings that reflect Nigeria’s independence history within the broader African decolonisation movement.

Lafarge Group Managing Director, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, said the rehabilitation demonstrates the company’s belief that preserving national monuments like the Independence Memorial Obelisk supports long-term sustainable development and strengthens Nigeria’s cultural narrative in a global context.

He explained that the project incorporated Ecoplanet Elephant, Lafarge Africa’s low-carbon cement product line, enabling the structural reinforcement of the Independence Memorial Obelisk while reducing carbon emissions in line with global climate-responsible construction practices.

Alade-Akinyemi noted that preserving the Independence Memorial Obelisk represents an investment in national memory and identity, stressing that historical monuments are critical to intergenerational learning and community cohesion in countries working to modernise without erasing the past.
