The Lagos State Government has expanded its Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) network with the deployment of four new sites aimed at improving road safety and enhancing traffic management.

Announcing the initiative at a press briefing in Alausa yesterday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that the new ITS sites will complement existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other Traffic Management Solutions (TMS).

This, he said, aligns with the state’s commitment to creating a safer and more efficient transportation system.

The ITS is structured into two main categories: checkpoint sites for monitoring speed and e-police sites for detecting traffic violations.

According to Osiyemi, speed-monitoring checkpoints have been installed at Alapere (80 km/h speed limit) and NITEL, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way (60 km/h speed limit) to curb over-speeding—one of the leading causes of road accidents in the state.

Additionally, e-police sites have been set up at Allen Avenue Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road with high-definition cameras to monitor infractions such as running red lights, lane violations, illegal U-turns, and driving in reverse on highways.

“All necessary road signs have been installed to notify motorists of these regulations, and enforcement begins immediately,” Osiyemi stated.

He added that violators would receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) detailing their infractions and corresponding fines.

The Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake, emphasised that the ITS aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for a smarter, safer, and more sustainable Lagos.

He noted that the initiative would address reckless driving and improve traffic flow through a technology-driven approach, reducing reliance on manual enforcement.

Applauding the state government for the initiative, Alake stressed that automated traffic management would create positive outcomes by minimizing human intervention while ensuring compliance with road regulations.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, clarified that the initiative is not designed to generate revenue but to encourage voluntary compliance with traffic laws.

He assured motorists that anyone who believes they were wrongly fined would have the opportunity to contest the penalty.

Similarly, Olayemi Joseph, Senior Solution Architect at Huawei Technologies, expressed pride in supporting Lagos’ traffic management efforts.

He highlighted that the ITS integrates information, communication, sensing, and computing technologies for real-time traffic monitoring and efficient law enforcement.

The deployment of the ITS follows Lagos State’s earlier introduction of ANPR cameras and Traffic Management Solutions (TMS), aimed at reducing human interference in traffic enforcement.
