The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has raised concerns after receiving an electricity bill of ₦29 million for April at his official residence.
He made this known on Monday during an event in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The event was organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency to support the use of renewable energy across the state.
Hamzat revealed that the bill had jumped from ₦2.7 million in March to ₦29 million in April.

He said he had paid for a prepaid meter in an effort to avoid estimated charges, but the electricity company did not activate it.
He also shared the experience of a Lagos resident whose electricity bill exceeded the rent of their apartment, showing how common the problem of estimated billing has become in the state.
While speaking on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat expressed frustration with the current electricity distribution system.
He said residents are dealing with unnecessary pressure from energy companies and many are unable to cope.
According to him, a more reliable and affordable energy solution is needed to meet the needs of both homes and businesses.
At the event, the state government signed an agreement with the REA to promote the use of solar energy, especially in places that are not well connected to the national power grid.
The project will focus on technical support, training, and attracting investment to improve electricity access in rural areas.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that many Lagos residents use large generators daily, even though the state has the capacity to generate power.
He said poor distribution has forced people to rely heavily on alternative sources, which is expensive and harmful to the environment.
He also directed that community groups be involved in planning and executing power projects to make sure the solutions match the needs of each area.
