The Lagos State Government has received a healthcare waste incinerator donated by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

This marks a step toward improving safe and environmentally responsible disposal of medical waste.

The equipment has been installed at the Agboyi-Ketu Primary Health Care Centre, with the official handover ceremony managed by the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB).

Speaking at the ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of the LSPHCB, Ibrahim Mustafa, expressed appreciation for the donation, describing it as a timely and strategic intervention.

He noted that the incinerator addresses the critical issue of effectively managing infectious and hazardous medical waste.

Mustafa emphasised that the facility is not only an investment in safer healthcare service delivery but also a strong reinforcement of our commitment to protecting patients, frontline workers, and the environment.

He highlighted that the facility aligns with the state’s broader goals of improving service quality, safety standards, and accountability across all primary healthcare centres.

The state is committed to ensuring the proper utilisation, maintenance, and long-term sustainability of the incinerator through staff training, adherence to operational standards, and routine monitoring.

He also disclosed that the state government plans to provide at least two additional incinerators in other areas of the State to further strengthen healthcare waste management.

Mustafa underscored the importance of partnerships, acknowledging UNICEF’s longstanding support in areas such as immunisation, maternal and child health, and health data systems.

He also thanked the Agboyi-Ketu LCDA for their cooperation, stating that community ownership and local government leadership are essential for long-term success.

The Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Adunni Abubakar, expressed delight that the area was selected to host the facility.

She assured stakeholders that the LCDA would ensure the safety, protection, and proper upkeep of the incinerator, recognising its importance to public health.

She also pledged her administration’s commitment to intensifying efforts to provide additional facilities and essential amenities, and affirmed full support for the LSPHCB’s activities, including the adoption of the prototype Primary Health Centre model.
