In a decisive step to restore civic discipline and public hygiene, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced the return of the Monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise across Lagos State.
The announcement came on Saturday at a symbolic flag-off ceremony at Olosa Bus Stop in the Mushin corridor.
The governor, joined by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and members of the State Cabinet, personally led the cleanup drive to mark the launch of the renewed initiative.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the Monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise would take place on the last Saturday of every month.
He stated that the activity would run from 6:30 am to 8:30 am. Unlike in previous years, the governor clarified that there would be no restrictions on vehicular or pedestrian movement during the exercise, in accordance with legal rulings that protect citizens’ right to free movement.

The governor explained that the decision follows a noticeable decline in environmental standards after the exercise was halted under a previous administration.
He stressed that maintaining a megacity like Lagos requires active partnership between the government and residents.
“We are reviving an era where everyone takes collective responsibility for the cleanliness of our environment,” he said.
“The state of our streets, markets, and drainage channels made it clear that the monthly sanitation must return.”
Sanwo-Olu added that while the state upholds the rule of law regarding movement, the responsibility to clean drains and surroundings remains a core civic duty.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasised that the exercise would be closely monitored.
State officials would supervise compliance across communities throughout the state. Sanctions would be imposed on neighbourhoods and markets that failed to comply, in accordance with the Lagos State 2017 Environmental Protection Law.
LAWMA personnel would also be on hand to ensure the swift collection and proper disposal of waste during the two-hour exercise.
The reintroduction of the programme aligns with the administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, reinforcing its commitment to a flood-free, liveable, and sustainable Lagos.
