In a clear demonstration of its readiness to host the inaugural edition of the National Intermediate Games, the Lagos State Government has unveiled the event’s logo and mascot, named “Lasgidi”, during a ceremony in Ikeja.
The unveiling marks the formal commencement of preparatory activities for the youth-focused sporting championship, which is scheduled to run from October 1 to 15, 2026, across multiple venues in the state.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Lekan Fatodu, stated that the unveiling represents a major milestone that highlights Lagos’ capacity to host a world-class sporting event.
He emphasised that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration is dedicated to delivering a spectacular competition that will provide a vital platform for young athletes to advance their professional careers.

Addressing infrastructure readiness, Fatodu explained that intensive renovation works are being accelerated at the Teslim Balogun Stadium to meet strict delivery timelines.
He added that the state is also partnering with private institutions, such as the British International School in Lekki, to utilize their premium sporting facilities and guarantee the best possible competitive experience for the participants.

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, praised the choice of Lagos as the host state for the maiden edition, attributing it to the state’s scientifically structured approach to grassroots talent development.
Olopade noted that the newly established National Intermediate Games serves as a critical bridge between the National Youth Games and the senior National Sports Festival.
In a novel development, Olopade announced that Nigerian children living in the diaspora will participate in the competition as the “38th state”.
He disclosed that selection trials for these diaspora athletes are scheduled to take place on July 17, 2026, in London.
According to the NSC boss, this initiative reflects President Bola Tinubu’s vision of utilizing sports to engage with and nurture young Nigerian talents globally, discouraging foreign nations from poaching them.
The official logo for the Games features a blend of local heritage and athletic themes, incorporating the iconic Eyo cap, the Opambata staff, the inscription “Eko”, colorful kinetic swirls, and three ascending stars.

The high-profile event was also attended by key state officials, including the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, and the Deputy Chief of Staff and LOC Co-Chairman, Sam Egube, signaling strong inter-ministerial synergy behind the tournament’s delivery.
