John Toshack, a revered figure for Liverpool and Wales, has been diagnosed with dementia at 77. His son Cameron confirmed the development, while revealing a condition marked by fluctuating memory.

The former striker earned 40 caps for Wales, scoring 13 goals and later managing the national side twice. He also built a vast managerial résumé across Europe, leaving his mark on elite clubs.

Cameron, a former Swansea City youth coach, described a daily reality shaped by memory lapses and remarkable recall. He explained the emotional contrast between fading present moments and vivid football memories.

“It’s a terrible disease,” Cameron Toshack, currently coaching in Thailand, told the Daily Mail. “It’s the short-term memory where we’re seeing it – I speak to him most days and if we chat in the afternoon, he might not remember that we also spoke in the morning.

“But if I ask him about the Liverpool days, or [Real] Sociedad or [Real] Madrid, the detail is amazing. The game could have been yesterday, his memory was so clear.”

Interestingly, Cameron still leans on his father’s tactical brilliance for guidance in his coaching journey. “I’ll talk to him about what we’re doing in Thailand and he still gives great advice,” he said.

“As a manager, he could always see two or three moves ahead, and it was always in the genes for me, really.” Those instincts continue to shine through despite the illness.

Despite serious illness in 2022 following Covid-19 complications, Toshack recovered and reflected on the ordeal. “When I think back on it now, it’s frightening,” he once admitted.
