Macclesfield striker Ethan McLeod dies aged 21 after tragic M1 crash

Ethan McLeod has died aged 21 after a tragic M1 crash.

The football community has been left in deep shock following the death of Macclesfield forward Ethan McLeod. The 21-year-old lost his life in a car accident late on Tuesday night.

McLeod was travelling home after featuring as a substitute in Macclesfield’s National League North match at Bedford Town. The collision occurred around 22:40 GMT near Northampton.

Police confirmed McLeod’s white Mercedes struck a barrier on the M1 motorway. Emergency services attended the scene, but the young forward could not be saved.

Macclesfield quickly released a statement expressing profound grief. The club described McLeod as “incredibly talented” and a “well-respected member” of the squad. They added that the news had devastated everyone connected to the club. Supporters, teammates, and staff were united in sorrow.

McLeod’s football journey began long before his move to Cheshire. As a boy, he spent a decade within Wolverhampton Wanderers’ academy system. During that period, he featured for Wolves’ under-21 side in the EFL Trophy. However, a senior first-team appearance never came.

After leaving Molineux, McLeod gained valuable experience on loan at Alvechurch. He later had brief spells with Rushall Olympic and Stourbridge. His pace, direct running, and positive attitude stood out wherever he played. Coaches consistently praised his work rate and hunger to improve.

In an emotional tribute, Macclesfield acknowledged the lasting pain of his passing. They stressed that the scars would never truly heal. However, the club insisted McLeod’s legacy would live on.

Tributes have poured in from across non-league football and beyond. Messages of support continue to reach his family and friends. Meanwhile, Macclesfield offered their deepest condolences to those closest to him while asking for privacy as everyone comes to terms with the loss.

The Silkmen are due to face Alfreton Town on Saturday. At the time of writing, it remains unclear whether the fixture will proceed.
