Harry Maguire has committed his future to Manchester United after the defender signed a new one-year contract. The agreement includes an option for a further extension, securing his presence beyond this season.
At 33, the England defender was approaching the end of his previous deal. However, both player and club have opted to continue a partnership shaped by highs and scrutiny.
Maguire arrived from Leicester City in 2019 for a record £80m fee. Since then, he has made 266 appearances and lifted both the League Cup and FA Cup.
“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day,” Maguire said.
“I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons, and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.”
Maguire’s journey has rarely been straightforward, despite early trust from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He was handed the captaincy quickly but later faced intense criticism.
Under Erik ten Hag, he lost the armband and nearly departed for West Ham United. Yet he chose to stay, determined to fight for his place.
Maguire’s resilience drives new Manchester United chapter
His role fluctuated again under Ruben Amorim before a resurgence under interim boss Michael Carrick. He has since started consistently and has been showcasing renewed confidence and authority.
“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear,” Maguire said.

“And I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”
Director of football Jason Wilcox praised the defender’s mindset and professionalism.
“Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad,” Wilcox said.

Despite criticism, managers have consistently valued his composure, strength, and leadership qualities. Moreover, his decision to reject a move in 2023 showed his commitment.
With experienced figures departing, his presence now carries even greater weight. For many supporters, this extension signals stability and belief in a proven figure.
Maguire may not be flawless, but his resilience defines his journey at the club. And now, his story at Manchester United continues.
