The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about counterfeit Postinor-2 emergency contraceptive pills circulating in the country.

The agency said the Society for Family Health (SFH) reported two types of fake Postinor-2 tablets containing Levonorgestrel 0.75mg.

According to NAFDAC, the fake pills can be identified by smaller font size on the verification sticker and a misspelling of “Verify” as “Veify.”

The two counterfeit batches have different details: one carries batch number T36184B, manufactured in August 2024 and expiring in August 2028, while the other shows batch number 332, produced in March 2023 with an expiry of February 2027.

The genuine Postinor-2 has batch number T32458H, made in February 2023 and expiring in February 2027.

The agency warned that using fake Postinor-2 poses serious health risks.

These include possible failure to prevent pregnancy, exposure to toxic substances, unpredictable side effects, delayed access to real contraception, and long-term reproductive health issues.

Allergic reactions, organ damage, and other severe outcomes are possible due to untested ingredients.

NAFDAC said all zonal directors and state coordinators are directed to identify and remove the counterfeit products from circulation.

The public, healthcare providers, and distributors are urged to buy Postinor-2 only from verified pharmacies or licensed sources and to check the authenticity and condition of the products carefully.
