Ndidi cleared for DR Congo playoff as CAF ends suspension fears for Super Eagles

CAF clears Wilfred Ndidi for Nigeria’s World Cup playoff against DR Congo, easing suspension fears ahead of Sunday’s decisive clash.

Wilfred Ndidi has been cleared to face DR Congo on Sunday, as CAF officially confirmed his eligibility for the decisive 2026 World Cup playoff.

The update, delivered on the Super Eagles official X page, eased rising concerns within the team’s camp. Moreover, the clarification ended the speculation that spread after Ndidi’s early booking against Gabon.

Although reports suggested he would miss the final, CAF outlined that accumulated cautions do not transfer into the playoff stage. Instead, only existing suspensions remain valid across both phases.

Consequently, the ruling allows Nigeria to retain one of their most influential midfielders for the clash in Uyo. Additionally, it removes the uncertainty that had hovered over the team’s preparations.

Because of this decision, the Super Eagles will look to avoid any administrative missteps, especially after the recent case involving South Africa. Earlier in the campaign, Bafana Bafana lost three points for fielding ineligible midfielder Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho. Yet, despite the deduction, they still managed to seal automatic qualification.

Ndidi’s recent form boosts Nigeria’s confidence

Ndidi’s availability comes as a major boost, as the midfielder impressed in Thursday’s 4-1 win over Gabon. Furthermore, he played a key role in dictating the midfield tempo throughout the game. He also provided a smart assist for Chidera Ejuke’s extra-time goal, which pushed Nigeria firmly ahead.

Additionally, the former Leicester City captain almost added another assist late in the second half. His well-weighted pass found Victor Osimhen in space, although the striker dragged his effort wide. Even so, Ndidi’s influence remained clear, and his sharp form strengthens Nigeria’s confidence ahead of the playoff.
