Nigeria at 65: Sanwo-Olu urges national unity

Babajide Sanwoolu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on all Nigerians to embrace the nation’s core values of resilience, patriotism, and religious faith, emphasising that Nigeria’s continued progress relies on the collective efforts of its citizens.

The governor delivered the message during the 65th National Independence Day Celebration Service held in Lagos yesterday.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Tayo Ayinde, Sanwo-Olu stated that the anniversary serves not only as a reminder of the country’s hard-won freedom but also as a renewed “call to renew dedication to building a stronger and more prosperous country.”

The governor highlighted the state as a successful model of diversity and inclusion, reiterating his administration’s commitment to fostering peace, unity, and accelerated development.

He stressed that the state will continue to create opportunities for all residents, irrespective of their backgrounds.

“As we look back on our journey, it is clear that it is only God’s grace that Nigeria has weathered both trials and triumphs. Here in Lagos, we witness grace every single day,” the governor’s statement read.

He added that the state, as a “melting pot of every tribe and language in the country, has become a haven of opportunity and unity.”

While acknowledging that the nation still faces significant challenges at 65, the governor expressed optimism.

He noted: “However, Lagos stands as a testament that with faith, resilience and dedicated leadership, progress is within reach. Lagos exemplifies that Nigeria’s potential is not just a dream but a reality we can achieve.”

Sanwo-Olu also thanked religious institutions for their role in promoting moral values and social cohesion, urging citizens to remain hopeful about the future.

He called for prayer for the nation’s leaders to be responsible stewards.

In a sermon titled “A Rising Nation,” Rev. Paul Fadayini, the District Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church, Lekki Phase 1, urged Nigerians to remain connected to God, expressing his strong belief that Nigeria “is a rising nation and will continue to rise and move forward.”
