The rate of insecurity in Nigeria has been a cause for worry for the citizens. However, the people are tired of the incessant cases. Initially, the complaints were about the northern part of the country but the east is equally having reoccurring cases. This does not rule out other regions suffering from this menace. Bandits seem to have taken over strategic areas in the country. Hence, this makes road travellers to be at their mercy.
Consequently, the citizens have called on the leaders to be more proactive in curbing the insecurity rate in the country. The recent cases equally necessitated the people to wonder if there is any end in sight.
Ahmed Gulak killed by unknown gunmen
On May 30, news of the death of a former aide to Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak in Imo state filled the internet. According to the reports, Gulak was on his way to Sam Mbakwe Airport from his hotel room when he was attacked by unknown gunmen. He was shot dead in his vehicle at around Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area close to the Airport.
The Nigerian Police stated that Gulak left Protea Hotel without informing them or their sister agencies. Besides, his cab driver reportedly took an irregular route where he was ambushed and killed.
Unrest in the East
On Saturday, May 29, there were reports that unidentified gunmen razed the Atta Divisional Police Headquarters in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo state. The attackers shot sporadically for more than one hour before setting the station ablaze.

Same day in Anambra, military officers were killed by unknown gunmen in Ihiala. This necessitated operatives to block the Onitsha Head Bridge for a stop and search. Consequently, the blockade caused many commuters to be stranded for hours. IMSU students have equally flooded social media complaining about being attacked by unknown gunmen several times.
NECO Registrar killed
Peoples Gazette reported that on Monday night, May 31, gunmen stormed the residence of NECO registrar, Professor Godswill Obioma, strangling him. This act was suspected to be an assassination.
“The assassins came in and killed him and left without taking anything,” Elizabeth Obioma reportedly told Peoples Gazette by telephone on Tuesday morning. She added that ‘’her husband had just returned to Minna from a trip to Abuja when the armed men, lurking in his compound, descended on him and strangled him.’’
Before his death, there have been attempts to remove Obioma, 67, as the head of NECO, an examination body run by the Nigerian government. The Abia state indigene was appointed head of NECO on May 14, 2020.
NECO later released a statement claiming Obioma died after a brief illness. This was quite conflicting as his family later affirmed the same thing which was contrary to the report of Peoples Gazette. Hence, some persons assumed that the contradiction in the cause of Obioma’s death may be a cover up attempt.
There is a general call by the citizens to protest on June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day. The forthcoming nationwide protest followed the ‘’Nigeria Bleeds’’ peaceful protest against insecurity on May 28 which marked the National Day of Mourning.
President Buhari has been urged to drop his sentiments against some sections of the country. The people are demanding fairness and justice in addressing the security situation in the country.
