Nigeria’s football community has been plunged into mourning following the reported death of Super Eagles legend Peter Rufai.
The 61-year-old former goalkeeper reportedly passed away on the morning of Thursday, July 3, 2025, after battling a long-term illness that had kept him away from the public for an extended period.
Though the family has yet to release an official statement, a senior Lagos State Government official confirmed the news, as reported by Radio Nigeria.

Regarded as one of Nigeria’s finest goalkeepers, Rufai was a commanding presence between the posts for both club and country. His storied career began with Stationery Stores in Lagos before he moved abroad to play for clubs like Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands.
