Nigerian star Fernandez wins Rangers Player of the Year

Rangers defender Fernandez caps dream debut season From League One to Ibrox king: Fernandez’s rise
Nigeria’s Fernandez voted Rangers’ best in first year

Emmanuel Fernandez swept the board at Rangers’ end‑of‑season awards, capping a meteoric debut season. He was voted Men’s Player of the Year by the Ibrox faithful after delivering a string of commanding, goal‑scoring displays from centre‑back.

Fernandez, 24, claimed the final and most prestigious award of the evening in Glasgow on Sunday. He added it to his place as the sole Rangers player named in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year.

Signed from Peterborough United last summer for an undisclosed fee (reported to be around €3.5 million), the 6ft 5in Nigerian international has been a revelation. He scored five league goals in just 23 starts while helping Rangers keep 12 clean sheets.

His all‑round influence has been staggering. Across all competitions, Fernandez has netted six times in 28 appearances. This includes a Europa League debut and a goal in the Scottish League Cup.

From League One to Ibrox stardom

Remarkably, just a year ago Fernandez was competing in English League One. After a delayed start to the season, he nailed down a starting role under manager Danny Röhl. He became the defensive anchor and an unexpected set‑piece threat.

Röhl has urged Fernandez to stay at least one more season, dangling the prospect of Champions League football. For now, the defender insists he is focused on finishing the season strongly and repaying the faith shown by the Rangers’ support.
