When the official Banyana Banyana squad for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) was announced, one name was glaringly missing – Thembi Kgatlana.
As questions swirled and rumours spread, many wondered why South Africa’s most influential forward was nowhere near the pitch. Now, the 29-year-old has spoken up, putting all speculation to rest.
Kgatlana, who plays for Tigres UANL Femenil in Mexico, revealed that her absence wasn’t a shock to the national team but rather part of a “pre-arranged leave of absence.”
Although her statement came after weeks of silence, it provided clarity for fans who felt disheartened by her exclusion from South Africa’s title defence campaign in Morocco.

Notably, Kgatlana has been central to Banyana Banyana’s success in recent years. Her speed, eye for goal, and leadership were pivotal during their historic 2022 WAFCON triumph. Unfortunately, her tournament was cut short due to an Achilles tendon injury, but her influence was still widely felt on and off the field.
In her explanation, the striker acknowledged that watching from afar had been emotionally tough. Yet, she maintained that stepping away from football temporarily was necessary.
“I love representing my country and will do so again in the future,” she assured fans, who have grown used to her fearless performances in green and gold.
Moreover, she addressed concerns from Tigres supporters. She made it clear that her commitment to the club remains unchanged. Although she hasn’t returned to Mexico just yet, Kgatlana stressed there is no hidden reason behind her absence.
“There is nothing to worry about and no deeper story,” she said, promising to be back in action soon.
South Africa have already been knocked out of the WAFCON 2024 tournament after losing 2-1 to the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the semi-final on Tuesday. The West African side will now face Morocco in the final on Saturday, 26th July.
